I am very fortunate to be the mother of the best little boy in the world (not that I'm biased or anything). My parenting decisions are influenced by Attachment Parenting (though I am not dogmatic about it). As a single mother (not by choice), I am regularly reminded of our culture's devaluing of parenting. Regardless of the age or temperament of the child, single moms are always expected to pursue full-time employment, as though their financial contributions are more important than their parenting contributions. It is especially disheartening to see this attitude from organizations that supposed advocate stay-at-home motheringin general, they only support stay-at-home mothering for married women. Why should it be assumed that mothering is less important for a child if his dad no longer lives with the family? OpinionBabies Who Love Too Much Why does our society see intimacy, nurturing, and responding to our babies' needs as damaging?
Is Parenthood a Career? Raising a kid is hard work and time-consuming, but equating it to other jobs leads to problems for parents and children. Why Are There No Married Fathers in Fathers' Rights Groups? Why have fathers' rights groups neglected the poor married fathers who are being deprived of the right to be equally involved in raising their own children? Parents for Legal and Nonsectarian Schools: if you are thinking about Waldorf education for your child, you must read this site! (Unless you don't mind racism and pseudoscience dressed up in flaky "spritual" Anthroposophical garb.) The Problem with Daycare: lengthy and disturbing article about the flaws in even the best daycare situations. Human infants and small children need more individual attention than a daycare can provide, and they need a stable consistent caregiver, not a series of changing employees. |
